The Giants need a new backup catcher to believe in.
Stephen Vogt has agreed to a one-year deal with a vesting option for a second season with the Diamondbacks, ESPN first reported Tuesday. The New York Post reported the deal came to about $3 million. He has said his top priority is having a chance at the World Series, and Arizona apparently was the most attractive option.
Vogt spent one memorable season with the Giants, more sharing catcher with Buster Posey than strictly serving as backup, and his bat forced his way into the lineup out of left field and first base, too.
He was a rare bright spot in a dark season, slashing .263/.314/.490 in 280 plate appearances since being called up in May. He also was an invaluable presence in the clubhouse, with many Giants rookies citing Vogt as a key mentor through their season.
The catchers have been quick to go off the market, Vogt following Yasmani Grandal (White Sox) and Travis d’Arnaud (Braves) to agree to deals early in the offseason. The Giants would prefer a lefty-hitting complement to Posey, with perhaps Alex Avila fitting the bill. Other free-agent catchers to watch are Robinson Chirinos, Jason Castro and Austin Romine.
