The Giants have widely been labeled as sellers leading up to this year’s MLB trade deadline. Yet with their 17-4 run in the last 21 games, putting them right back into the thick of the NL Wild Card race, it seems the team’s plans may have shifted. On Thursday afternoon, Jon Morosi of MLB Network reported that the Giants sent one of their high-level scouts to watch Detroit Tigers’ starting pitcher, Matthew Boyd, on Tuesday.
#SFGiants had a high-level scout at Matthew Boyd’s start in Detroit on Tuesday, which supports @Feinsand’s report about the Giants potentially *buying* in the coming days. @MLB @MLBNetwork

As stated in Morosi’s tweet, this supports Mark Feinsand’s report Thursday afternoon that the Giants are unlikely to move on from longtime ace, Madison Bumgarner. Furthermore, Feinsand also stated that if the team continues their tear, the Giants are “poised to become buyers.”
Matthew Boyd, 28, is currently 6-8 with a 4.07 ERA and would add a veteran presence to a rotation that currently has two rookies in it.
To make things even more interesting, Josh Norris of Baseball America, is reporting that the Giants also sent a scout to high Class A Tampa on Wednesday night.

The Tampa Tarpons are the New York Yankees high Class A affiliate and the Yankees top position prospect, center fielder Estevan Florial, played in that game. It has been speculated that the Yankees are looking to add starting pitching before the trade deadline on July 31st, i.e. Madison Bumgarner. Heading into the final four games before the trade deadline, it seems as if Farhan Zaidi and the Giants are preparing for every possible scenario. The Giants start a three game series against the Padres on Friday night, which will most likely play a significant role in what direction Zaidi decides to take the Giants.
