Krukow details what Giants’ ‘main goal’ is with Holland, Pomeranz

Two of the Giants’ offseason signings haven’t exactly performed how the team had hoped. Derek Holland and Drew Pomeranz have struggled during the first half of the season. Holland currently sits at 1-4 with a 6.80 ERA while Pomeranz is 1-5 with a 6.45 ERA. But just because there have been some early season pains doesn’t mean these two guys can’t benefit San Francisco.

Giants broadcaster Mike Krukow joined the Murph and Mac show this morning to discuss how the team could proceed regarding these two left handers.

“For right now, you hope these guys find it,” Krukow said. “The fact that they have a track record. We saw what Derek Holland did last year, I mean he really had a good year and his reward was he got another contract for $7 million. Pomeranz two years ago was a 17-game winner.”

However, Krukow sees aspects in both pitchers’ games that could use some fine tuning.

“What I see from Pomeranz basically is he’s a two-pitch guy. I think he needs to have another look, another speed. I can’t figure out why he hasn’t been more successful when looking at his stuff,” Krukow claims. “With Derek Holland…I think mechanically he’s a little screwed up right now. He’s got a hump in his curveball. I think that is something he can fix and get back to where he makes contributions.”

As we are only a third of the way through the regular season, there is reason to believe Pomeranz and Holland can start producing at levels they both have done in their careers. As the dog days of summer approach, Krukow thinks there is a chance these two pitchers could be flipped for young talent.

“Now as the season unfolds and we get closer into August and September, I think if those guys are throwing right, you could get something for those guys. If you’re looking at a trade; maybe a prospect. But you got to get them throwing right, you got to get them fixed. So that’s the main goal, you get them fixed and they can help you now and if they’re fixed, they can help you a little more down the road and you can get something for them.”

As the Giants fall more and more out of contention each game, it seems the chances of the team as a seller on the market increases daily. If Pomeranz and/or Holland can start performing, receiving a couple prospects in return could be huge for what is considered to be a depleted farm system.
