The 2015-16 Golden State Warriors posted the greatest regular season record in NBA history, winning 73 games en route to a second consecutive NBA Finals appearance. Despite that fact, Warriors general manager Bob Myers doesn’t believe that team would be able to beat this current Warriors squad in a seven game series.
“I think the league has evolved from where it was then. They’ve shifted more towards the style that we were playing then,” Myers told Murph & Mac on KNBR Wednesday morning. “We’ve changed too but the league has certainly become more athletic in many ways, you’ve got more position-less guys, it’s a better shooting league, everybody’s playing faster.”
There’s also the fact that the 2017-18 Warriors have Kevin Durant. While they’ve never quite reached the consistant dominance of the 73-win team with KD in the fold, it’s hard to deny that today’s Warriors don’t have more upside. The ’15-’16 Warriors were unable to ride their regular season dominance to an NBA title, something they haven’t had an issue with since Durant joined the team.
“The league has changed but here’s the question to ask when that kind of thought is raised, which is a very fair thought, and this is not me being defensive at all, but I think this team beats that team in a series.
“I think this is a better team. And people will say, ‘It’s crazy. You were 24-0 and you won 73 games.’ I still believe in a seven-game series, this roster beats that roster.”
The Warriors currently have a record of 30-14, and took control of the Western Conference with a dominant 142-111 win over the Denver Nuggets on Tuesday.
