Because they hold his rights, the Warriors have the option of either matching the Cavs offer and retaining McCaw, or letting him walk. Though previous reports have indicated Golden State’s desire to match, a two-year offer probably makes that less likely. Signing McCaw would also fill the 15th spot on the Warriors roster with DeMarcus Cousins nearing a return.
McCaw never reported to training camp during the offseason, apparently holding out in the hopes that another team would offer him more than the Warriors’ $1.7 million qualifying offer. McCaw continued the holdout once the regular season started, and even went “dark” according to teammates who had trouble contacting him.
McCaw averaged four points and 1.4 rebounds while shooting under 30 percent from three in his two seasons with Golden State.
The Warriors have until Jan. 7 to make a decision.
