Well, that was quick. After the 49ers announced on Tuesday that they were signing Tom Savage as a third-string quarterback, they reversed that decision today by releasing Savage. The move was made in order to add cornerback Tyvis Powell to the roster as the team deals with a shortage of support in the secondary, according to Matt Maiocco.
The 49ers have a shortage of defensive backs so, they promote CB Tyvis Powell from the practice squad and release QB Tom Savage. They’ll probably bring Savage back at their first opportunity.

However, as Maiocco said, the 49ers will likely look to bring Savage back as soon as they can. The 49ers simply didn’t have a roster spot available to give to Savage until Tuesday, when they waived tight end Cole Wick and released offensive lineman Zach Golditch from their practice squad.
Head coach Kyle Shanahan has stressed his desire to bring in a third quarterback when a spot opens up, but in a league where injuries are a constant, the spot for a player like Savage can disappear as quickly as it opens.
QB Tom Savage will likely be back when the #49ers have the luxury of enough healthy players at other positions to field a team. He made more than $46,470 for being with the team Tuesday-Saturday.
