Bruce Bochy will not be in the dugout for the Giants’ clash against the Brewers on Sunday, and instead will be heading to Cooperstown for the Hall of Fame induction ceremony of former Padres closer Trevor Hoffman.

Bochy managed Hoffman during his entire tenure in San Diego from 1995-2006. During that span, Hoffman made five All-Star games and accumulated 457 saves while posting a 2.58 ERA and an incredible 1.01 WHIP.

“It’s awesome for this to happen,” Bochy said in January of Hoffman’s induction. “I think it is somewhat overdue. I mean what he did for the San Diego Padres, the city, myself, I mean I’m probably still managing because of Trevor Hoffman. That’s what I think about him.

“He was just the anchor in that bullpen, and not just what he did with the saves. You know every year he just made our bullpen better, and he took it upon himself to make them better. He would take guys under his wing and make sure they did their work, went through their conditioning, make sure they were prepared, so his leadership in that clubhouse has been just invaluable. I’m indebted to him and I’m glad to see the closer get acknowledged.”

Hoffman’s 601 saves are second on the all-time list behind only Mariano Rivera (652).
