Brandon Belt was absent from the Giants first game back after the All-Star break, and for good reason. Belt welcomed his second child and second son, August “Augie” Kyle Belt, into the world.
While Belt was absent from the field, he and Augie were with the team in spirit. In the bottom of the eighth inning of Friday’s game, with the Giants leading 5-1, Belt tweeted a photo of him beside his newborn son with the caption, “Me and my boy watching the Giants take care of business.”
Giants manager Bruce Bochy said he expects that Belt will be back with the team Saturday, but the Giants performed well in his absence. Pablo Sandoval, who replaced Belt at first base, hit a home run and a double in the game. Belt’s absence also resulted in the call-up of Ryder Jones from the Triple-A Sacramento Rivercats. Jones started at third base in his first game of the season and hit a home run off the top of the right-field foul pole in his second at-bat.
