Andrew McCutchen hit by pitch, exits game with apparent elbow injury

Andrew McCutchen was forced to exit Wednesday’s game vs. the Padres after being hit in the right elbow by a pitch in the bottom of the second inning.

According to Andrew Baggarly of The Athletic, X-rays came back negative ruling out a fracture. McCutchen has been officially diagnosed with an elbow contusion.

McCutchen’s injury comes a day after Johnny Cueto was placed back on the 10-day disabled list with a right elbow issue of his own.

Losing McCutchen for an extended period of time would be a significant blow for the Giants, who are currently without their two best pitchers in Cueto and Madison Bumgarner, and outfielders Mac Williamson and Hunter Pence. McCutchen’s absence would likely mean extended playing time for both Gorkys Hernandez and Gregor Blanco.

In his first season with the Giants, McCutchen has posted a slash line of .214/.341/.359 in 29 games.
