Mac Williamson gives update after head-first crash into wall

SAN FRANCISCO — On Tuesday night, Giants left fielder Mac Williamson took a head first dive into the third baseline wall while trying to catch a foul ball.

Giants starting pitcher Ty Blach backed himself into a corner in the top of the fifth inning, with two runners on, two outs, and Bryce Harper at the plate. Trying to pitch himself out of the situation, Blach was able to induce Harper into hitting a foul ball into shallow left field. As Williamson stretched out for it, he was suddenly tripped up by the elevated bullpen mounds along the third base line. Williamson tucked and rolled as he flew head-first into the padding, and sat dazed for a moment.

The next play Harper grounded out, and Williamson went to the clubhouse to get checked for a concussion. He came out the following inning and played the remainder of the game.

After the game, Williamson recounted the moments before impact.

“I tried to roll my neck a little bit when I started going down, so I think that helped break my fall,” said Williamson. “My head and my neck don’t hurt. I think I made it out alright, got pretty lucky.”

More than anything, Williamson was more disappointed that he couldn’t make the critical catch for Ty Blach.

“I was just frustrated I didn’t come up with the play to be honest,” said Williamson.

Once he entered the dugout, the Giants medical staff checked him for a concussion, but Williamson said he was feeling fine.

“Yea they went through all the stuff in the dugout, just asking me all the questions. I’ve never had one before. I felt fine then, I feel fine now, so I’m sure once the adrenaline wears off later tonight, tomorrow we’ll see how the body feels. I’m sure I’ll be a little sore.”

After tonight’s scare, this might be a case for lowering the bullpen mounds here at AT&T Park.
