The 49ers and Seahawks have swapped starting cornerbacks.

Seattle is signing cornerback Dontae Johnson, who started all 16 games for the 49ers last year, according to Mike Garafolo of NFL Network.

Johnson, 26, was a fourth-round draft pick by then 49ers general manager Trent Baalke in 2014, and won the starting job in training camp last offseason for the first time in his career. Despite being one of the few players who started every game for San Francisco in 2017, Johnson struggled consistently, and finished the season ranked as the third worst cornerback in football (118 out of 121) according to Pro Football Focus.

It is unclear where Johnson will land on the Seahawks depth chart. Currently, last season’s third round pick Shaquill Griffin and Neiko Thorpe are tagged as the favorites to be the team’s starting corners, following the departure of Richard Sherman to the 49ers.
