Despite the fact that some experts are already picking the 49ers to make the NFC Championship Game next year, Joe Montana isn’t ready to anoint Jimmy Garoppolo just yet.

The four-time Super Bowl champion joined Good Morning Football on Tuesday, and said that while there’s a lot of excitement surrounding Garoppolo, he still has a lot to prove this season.

“I think it’s still a little early for it myself,” Montana said of the Jimmy G hype. “He’s obviously had a lot more success in the games he’s played in so far then the other quarterbacks that have played there recently. I think there is a lot of excitement in the Bay Area about it. I think this year will be a big tell on it. They payed a lot of money for him so I think there’s some belief there that he’ll be there for a while.”

Garoppolo went 5-0 as the 49ers’ starting quarterback to finish the 2017 season, helping him earn a record-setting five-year contract extension worth $137.5 million in February. A four-year veteran, Garoppolo enters the 2018 season as a full-time starter for the first time in his young career.
