The arrest continues a troubling pattern that started during the NFL Draft combine last March. Foster, 23, gave a diluted drug test sample and was then sent home after an altercation with a hospital employee. On Jan. 12 of this year, Foster was arrested in in Tuscaloosa, Ala., for second-degree marijuana possession.
The 49ers selected Foster with the 31st overall pick in the first round of the 2017 Draft. Foster had a fantastic rookie season, ranking as the fourth best linebacker in football according to Pro Football Focus despite playing in only 10 games due to injury.
After selecting Foster, General manager John Lynch was asked about the concerns regarding the linebacker’s character, that largely led to him falling deep into the first round.
“I would anticipate people maybe questioning some of his character, but I would tell you his character’s what drew us to him,” Lynch said after the 49ers selected Foster in the first round on April 27. “When you start talking football with this young man, he lights up a room, and he’s a good kid. I believe in the kid and I think it’s going to be — he’s going to be a great player for this organization for a long time.”
Shortly after the allegations were made public, the 49ers released a statement.
Statement from the San Francisco 49ers:
“The San Francisco 49ers organization is aware of the report regarding Reuben Foster. We take matters of this nature seriously and are gathering all pertinent information.”
