For the second time this offseason, the San Francisco Giants acquired the face of a different franchise, as general manager Bobby Evans completed a trade for Pirates’ outfielder Andrew McCutchen.

The 31-year-old McCutchen has spent all nine of his Major League seasons with the Pirates, earning the 2013 MVP Award and five All-Star nominations during his time in Pittsburgh. After being notified of his trade on Monday afternoon, McCutchen posted a heartfelt goodbye to Pirates fans and the city of Pittsburgh, acknowledging the role the team’s fans played on his journey.

McCutchen has written several pieces for The Players’ Tribune during his career, including an article about his upbringing and a post last February about how he dealt with trade rumors.

After the trade was reported on social media, former Giants’ reliever and Pirates’ pitcher George Kontos tweeted to McCutchen about his new franchise, while San Francisco outfielder Hunter Pence also posted about his excitement to play alongside McCutchen next season.

McCutchen joins former Tampa Bay Rays’ third baseman Evan Longoria as the Giants’ two offseason acquisitions to date, as both players will be playing for a new team for the first time in their respective careers.
