The 49ers released a statement Friday night to address Foster’s arrest:
“The San Francisco 49ers organization is aware of the matter involving Reuben Foster and we are currently gathering all relevant facts.”
During his three years playing under head coach Nick Saban at Alabama, Foster was named first-team All-SEC and won the Butkus Award as the nation’s top linebacker in 2016. His accolades on the football field caught the attention of the 49ers, who selected him No. 31 overall in the 2017 NFL Draft.
Part of the reason that Foster fell in the Draft was due to off-the-field concerns, including a diluted sample during a urine test at the NFL Combine.
With the 49ers, Foster was tied at seventh among his fellow rookies with 59 tackles, a category he could have been ranked higher in if he had not missed six games throughout the season due to injury. Nonetheless, Foster made 25 tackles over the course of three games to become the NFL’s Defensive Rookie of the Month in November.
