It started as a tweet, but it appears that Stephen Curry wasn’t joking when he said he was interested in potentially trying to become an owner of the Carolina Panthers, Curry’s hometown football team.

Monday night the Golden State Warriors return to Oakland to host the Denver Nuggets after finishing a perfect 3-0 on their week-long road trip. The team held shootaround in downtown Oakland, and Curry appeared to double down on his interest in owning the team.
“It’s a pretty interesting opportunity,” Curry told reporters. “I’ve had conversations with plenty of people about the right way to go about it. Just the different approaches I could personally take. Obviously I have a day job, but I got people that are plugged in in trying to see how to make that happen.
“I have nothing to say about it besides I’m very interested and very willing to do what it takes to make that happen.”

Right now the Panthers are owned by Jerry Richardson, who has been at the helm since the team was added as the 29th NFL Franchise back in 1993. Following a report by Sports Illustrated that the Panthers had made several confidential payouts for workplace misconduct due to sexual harassment and racial slurs, Richardson released a statement through the team that he would be selling the franchise at the end of the 2017 season.
Sunday night the Panthers lost to the New Orleans Saints in the weekend’s final Wild Card game, officially ending the team’s season. Richardson said in his statement, “We will not begin the sale process, nor will we entertain any inquiries, until the very last game is played.”
That time has come. Now we wait and see how serious Curry and company are in acquiring the team.
