Jimmy Garoppolo has been fantastic in his first two games as the 49ers’ starting quarterback. In addition to leading the team to consecutive victories for the first time since 2014, Garoppolo’s combined 627 passing yards in his first two starts are the most ever by a 49ers QB in their first two starts.
The performances have definitely given San Francisco enough cause to bring back Garoppolo next season on the franchise tag, but Peter King of the Monday Morning Quarterback told Tolbert & Lund on Thursday that he thinks John Lynch should do everything he can to ink Jimmy G to a long-term deal this offseason.
“I’m not trying to put Bill Belichick or Tom Brady in some league beyond the NFL, I’m just simply trying to make this point about those two people,” King began. “If you’re around them and the knowledge can seep into you, you’ve got a very very good chance to be a good NFL player. Now you’ve got to be good yourself, and so obviously there’s a reason Garoppolo was drafted in the second round, he’s good. But I really think when I look at Jimmy Garoppolo right now, I see this calm. This ‘nothing is going to shake me, and not only that I’m ready for every situation.’
“I think people in San Francisco should be excited about him and I think the 49ers should be trying their best, even though they don’t have to, this offseason, to do a five-year deal with him and just to get him locked up so this never has to be a worry for the next few years.”
