The 49ers have produced two Hall of Fame quarterbacks since the 1970 merger, and neither of them accomplished what Jimmy Garoppolo has done in his first two games as San Francisco’s signal caller.
Jimmy Garoppolo’s 627 passing yards in his first 2 starts are the most by a #49ers QB in his first 2 starts since the merger in 1970.

After throwing for 293 yards in his first start against the Bears, Garoppolo was even more prolific against the Texans, throwing for 334 yards in another winning effort. Impressively, neither Steve Young nor Joe Montana were able to match such numbers in their first two respective starts as 49ers QB. Young threw for 298 yards in his first two starts with the 49ers in 1987, barely matching the output of Garoppolo’s debut. Montana, didn’t match it, throwing for 288 in his first two starts in the 1979 and 1980 seasons.
Garoppolo has been just about as good as anyone could’ve hoped in his first two starts, and has led the 49ers to consecutive victories for the first time since the 2014 season. Garoppolo is also completing 66.7 percent of his passes, good for sixth best in the NFL. Garoppolo has now won all four games he’s started throughout his brief career.
