One of the most trusted names on the Giants’ beat had some good news for fans of the orange and black when he joined Gary & Larry on Tuesday afternoon.
Henry Schulman of the San Francisco Chronicle said he believes there is a 60 percent chance that the Giants will land Giancarlo Stanton, and that the Marlins have agreed to their trade offer as they wait for the player’s approval.
“I said it last week and I still believe it, it’s about 60-40 (percent) that Stanton comes to the Giants,” Schulman said. “I mean from everything we’ve heard he really does want to play on the West Coast. The Marlins interestingly were kind’ve rooting for the Cardinals because from what I understand the offer that the Cardinals had is better than the offer that the Giants had in terms of players coming back, but it’s really not the Marlins’ call right now.”
The Giants remain Stanton’s second choice behind the Los Angeles Dodgers, but may win the sweepstakes by default as the Dodgers have reportedly not made an offer for the NL MVP, and are supposedly looking to continue to cut payroll rather than add to their luxury tax bill. Stanton reportedly has no interest playing in St. Louis.
Schulman believes that the Giants may have an answer on Stanton, and the fate of Japanese sensation Shohei Otani, who put the Giants on his shortlist of teams, before next Monday.
“The deal with Stanton is done with the Marlins they are just waiting for him to decide between the Giants, the Cardinals or nobody, because he might want to wait to see if the Dodgers are willing to put out a bid for him, and with Otani I think this is going to happen fast,” Schulman said. “With the Winter Meetings approaching on Monday, I would assume before then there will be a little more clarity to the Stanton situation and the Otani situation.”
