Maiocco: Jimmy Garoppolo’s personality helping C.J. Beathard, 49ers with impending transition

After being traded to the 49ers roughly two weeks ago, Jimmy Garoppolo was the new-kid-at-school in the locker room. While the hype surrounding his acquisition could have easily made him the high school hot-head, 49ers insider Matt Maiocco told Murph & Mac on Thursday morning that Garoppolo is bonding with his new teammates, especially fellow quarterback C.J. Beathard.

“He’s been fitting in very well,” Maiocco said. “C.J. Beathard told me this thing would have been a lot more difficult on him had Jimmy come in and just been a real jerk. [Beathard] said [Garoppolo] hasn’t been and everyone likes him.”

Last Sunday, Beathard led the 49ers to their first victory of the season with the best start of his young career. Beathard put up 288 yards against the New York Giants, throwing two touchdowns and giving up only one interception.

Nonetheless, Beathard’s days as starting quarterback are likely numbered because of Garoppolo’s acquisition. Although Beathard’s strong showing against the Giants raised the expectation that he will start against the Seattle Seahawks next week, it’s probably only a matter of time before Garoppolo takes his place.

“I don’t know that there’s great urgency to get him to play, especially coming off a game where C.J. Beathard played so well and the amount of toughness that he’s shown,” Maiocco said.

General manager John Lynch shares Beathard’s admiration for not only Garoppolo’s personality, but also his work ethic.

“John Lynch said he hasn’t seen anything in the two weeks that would dissuade them from making him a long-term part of the organization,” Maiocco said. “He’s been working, he’s been showing up early, working hard to figure this stuff out.”
