49ers trade Rashard Robinson to Jets [report]

After making a trade for their presumptive franchise quarterback, the 49ers wheeling and dealing continued on Tuesday.

San Francisco is trading starting cornerback Rashard Robinson to the New York Jets, according to Ian Rapoport of NFL Network. The 49ers are receiving a fifth-round pick in the 2018 draft in return, according to Matt Maiocco of NBC Sports Bay Area.

Trent Baalke selected Robinson in the fourth round of last year’s draft, two spots ahead of Dak Prescott. Robinson won a starting corner spot this offseason at just 22-years old, but has struggled mightily at times during the 2017 season, leading the league in defensive pass interference calls. Rookie cornerback Ahkello Witherspoon, a third-round pick by GM John Lynch in this year’s draft, took the starting job from Robinson last week largely due to Robinson’s penalty issues. Robinson committed two more penalties on special teams in last week’s loss to the Eagles.

Pro Football Focus ranked Robinson 104 out of the 114 qualifying cornerbacks in overall effectiveness this season.
