Shanahan confirms Foster suffered high-ankle sprain, provides loose timetable for return

SANTA CLARA – It appears that Reuben Foster will miss multiple games after suffering a high-ankle sprain Week 1 against the Carolina Panthers.

Monday afternoon 49ers head coach Kyle Shanahan confirmed what Ian Rapoport reported earlier in the day. He didn’t give an exact return date for the rookie, but shed some light on when he expects Foster back in action.

“It’s a high ankle sprain,” said Shanahan. “[Jeff Ferguson] didn’t give me an exact date because we don’t know exactly with Reuben. We’re going to put him in a boot here for a little bit but those tend to be a month, a little more, but I can’t put exactly a date on it. That’s my experience with high-ankle sprains.”

While it’s not exactly good news for 49ers fans, the diagnosis could have been much worse.

Foster was injured while tackling fellow rookie Christian McCaffery early in the contest on Sunday. He was immediately carted off the field, and did not return to the game.

Ray-Ray Armstrong stepped in for Foster after the injury. He’s expected to start while Foster rehabs his ankle.
