Jaquiski Tartt snags leaping one-handed interception against Cam Newton

SANTA CLARA–No Jimmie Ward?

Have no fear, Jaquiski Tartt is here.

Following an early Carolina Panthers’ touchdown pass that materialized thanks to a blown coverage and then a missed tackle by Tartt, the 49ers’ starting free safety atoned for his mistake with a leaping, one-handed interception to take a potential touchdown pass away from Cam Newton.

With 10 minutes remaining in the second quarter, Newton checked in for a home run ball, but the 49ers’ free safety came ranging across the field and jumped in front of the pass to haul in San Francisco’s first turnover of the day.

Tartt started in place of injured 49ers’ safety Jimmie Ward, who was out on Sunday with a hamstring issue. Tartt received the start ahead of undrafted rookie free agent Lorenzo Jerome, who has also appeared at free safety during Sunday’s matchup.
