PHOENIX, Ariz–The San Francisco Giants have their starting second baseman back.
On Friday afternoon, the club announced it had activated Joe Panik from the seven-day concussion disabled list a day after San Francisco optioned infielder Orlando Calixte back to AAA Sacramento.
Panik suffered a concussion two weeks ago in Washington, D.C. when a throw from outfielder Michael Taylor caromed off the side of his face as Panik slid into home plate. Panik stayed in the game, but reportedly experienced headaches afterward and was placed on the disabled list shortly thereafter.
Kelby Tomlinson has started in Panik’s place at second base, but Panik is expected to return to the starting lineup on Friday evening in Arizona as the Giants take on the Diamondbacks.
Calixte did not start after being called up by the Giants, but he did make a few appearances as a pinch hitter for San Francisco.
With Panik back, the Giants are now waiting to activate first baseman Brandon Belt from the concussion disabled list, but manager Bruce Bochy said Wednesday that it could be a few weeks before Belt is set to return.
