The San Francisco Giants have optioned utility player Orlando Calixte to Triple-A Sacramento as first reported by Andrew Baggarly of The San Jose Mercury News. It is assumed that this move is bing made to open up a roster spot for Joe Panik, who is expected to be activated from the disabled list during the Giants’ upcoming series in Arizona.
#SFGiants have optioned Orlando Calixte to AAA. So they have a roster vacancy if they decide to activate Joe Panik tomorrow in Arizona.

Calixte, 25, who the Giants acquired in a minor league deal this offseason, has struggled with the big league club in 15 games this season, posting an atrocious line of .176/.237/.206 in 34 at-bats. In a much larger sample size with the River Cats, however, Calixte has been solid, hitting .246/.284/.432 with 13 home runs.
Panik has been out with a concussion since being tagged in the head on August 13. He went 0-for-5 through two rehab games with Single-A San Jose, but not longer has concussion symptoms, and is likely to be activated before Friday’s game.
