Denard Span had just stolen second base, but Hunter Pence was about to show the San Francisco Giants’ center fielder what speed really looks like.
In the bottom half of the fifth inning, Giants’ left fielder Jarrett Parker launched a double into right center field at AT&T Park off Phillies’ right-hander Aaron Nola, and it set off a merry-go-round of San Francisco outfielders around the base paths.
Span didn’t get a great jump off the bat, and waited an extra second to see if Phillies’ center fielder Nick Williams was going to catch Parker’s blast. Pence read the ball perfectly, and sprinted off of first base when he realized the ball wasn’t going to be caught.
The result? Pence essentially raced Span around third base and toward home plate, as the pair scored within half a second of one another to give the Giants a 4-1 lead.

Pence looked like he and Span were playing a game of tag, and as he was hot on his heels all the way to the Giants’ dugout.
