According to many experts, right-handed pitcher Tyler Beede is the best prospect in the San Francisco Giants organization. Beede was the only member of the team included in Baseball America’s Top 100 prospects list for 2017, and is primed to join the big league rotation next season, after their shaky showing this year.
With the season essentially over, now would be the perfect time to give Beede a test run in San Francisco for the next two months. Unfortunately, it looks like a groin injury is going to keep him out for the remainder of the 2017 regular season, according to general manager Bobby Evans.
“It’s going to be tough, just because he’s got the groin strain,” Evans said when asked by Brian Murphy about Beede’s return on KNBR Thursday morning. “He’s probably two or three weeks out from throwing off the mound just to make sure he’s feeling good, and then he’s got to get the running program down. Once you get the running down then you’ve got to start throwing your pens, get stretched out. So he’s another guy you’ll see in the Arizona Fall League. Probably our starting pitcher there, representing us and getting stretched back out. Anything’s possible in 2018, but hard to see him coming back before September’s over this year.”
The news adds injury to insult on what has been a truly dismal year for the organization, that has seen the big league club flounder while top prospects have been decimated by injuries. Evans also announced on Thursday that prospect Christian Arroyo will be out for the remainder of the 2017 season, after undergoing surgery to repair a fractured hand.
Beede hasn’t exactly been stellar this season for AAA Sacramento, posting a 4.79 ERA in 19 starts, looking far less sharp than he did after breaking out last season with a 2.81 ERA at AA Richmond. Beede did have arguably the best start of the season before his injury, however, tossing seven innings of shutout ball while striking out five on July 19.
