The Giants will have to face Giancarlo Stanton for three consecutive games this week, but after his first at-bat on Monday evening, Stanton gave San Francisco a reason to give him the old Barry Bonds treatment.
After Marlins’ second baseman Dee Gordon led off the bottom of the first inning with a single, Stanton stepped in to face Giants’ rookie Ty Blach.
Having homered in four consecutive games, Stanton entered the contest tied for the Marlins’ single-season home run record with Gary Sheffield at 42.
It didn’t take long for Stanton to make his mark on Monday’s game, as he redirected a 2-0 fastball from Blach over the left field fence to set the Marlins’ new record. It’s a record that Stanton will now have plenty of time to add to.
Stanton became the first and only visiting right-handed hitter to hit a home run to right field at AT&T Park earlier this season when the Marlins were in town to face the Giants. Since then, Nick Hundley and Hunter Pence are the only two right-handers to launch opposite field home runs at AT&T Park this year.
