Pablo Sandoval unleashes mammoth upper deck home run against Max Scherzer

Not many players have figured out Nationals’ right-hander Max Scherzer this season.

And more specifically, not many Giants’ players have held their own against the pitcher who entered Sunday evening with the second-best earned run average in the National League.

But in the top half of the seventh inning on Sunday night, Pablo Sandoval unleashed a memorable swing against Scherzer, and it silenced fans at Nationals Park.

With San Francisco trailing 2-1 in the top of the seventh, Sandoval stepped in against the Nationals’ righty and unloaded on a 1-0 fastball to place a tape-measure shot into the upper deck in right field. Sandoval’s blast, his first as a Giant since being designated for assignment by the Boston Red Sox, was his first regular season shot with the orange and black since he homered on September 5, 2014 against the Detroit Tigers.

Statcast measured the exit velocity of Sandoval’s home run at 110 miles per hour, and measured the distance at 423 feet. The Giants measured it on the scoreboard, as it helped San Francisco knot up the score and gave the team an opportunity to win its third consecutive series.
