49ers release first depth chart, Reuben Foster listed as a starter

It didn’t take long for 49ers’ rookie linebacker Reuben Foster to rise up the team’s depth chart.

On Monday evening, San Francisco released its first official depth chart under new head coach Kyle Shanahan and general manager John Lynch, and the 31st overall pick in the 2017 NFL Draft was listed as the starting Will linebacker on the first-team defense.

Though a significant injury to 49ers’ linebacker Malcolm Smith created a pathway to the top of the depth chart for Foster, the new coaching staff has clearly been impressed by his improvement thus far in training camp.

Foster’s spot on the 49ers’ starting defense isn’t the only significant news that came from Monday’s depth chart, as the chart compiled by the 49ers confirmed Brian Hoyer’s spot as the team’s No. 1 quarterbacks while Matt Barkley is still listed ahead of rookie C.J. Beathard as Hoyer’s backup.

Foster was the second player drafted by the 49ers in 2017, as he went 28 selections after the 49ers took Stanford’s Solomon Thomas with the third overall selection in the 2017 NFL Draft. Thomas is currently listed as a second team defensive end behind starter Tank Carradine.

Another notable player on the 49ers’ depth chart is wide receiver Marquise Goodwin, who is listed opposite Pierre Garcon as a starting wide receiver after kicking off camp with a strong start.
