Belt believes concussion isn’t as serious as prior head injuries

SAN FRANCISCO – Bruce Bochy said Sunday that Brandon Belt thinks the symptoms from getting hit in the head with a curveball Friday night aren’t as serious as previous concussions the first baseman has endured.

Belt will stay home and rest Sunday while his team hosts the Arizona Diamondbacks, but his manager offered a small update to Belt’s condition.

“He went through all the tests, he’s got a concussion,” Bochy said. “So it’s going to be a few days probably before he starts feeling a little better.

“First day I talked to him he didn’t feel the symptoms as much as he did the previous ones. I guess what I’m saying is it seems milder to him, so that’s good news. But you don’t know with these concussions. He thought he was over it the last time and then it came back. So it’s going to take some time.”

Sixteen games out of the final playoff spot, there’s absolutely no reason for the Giants to rush Belt back into the lineup, and might actually be some incentive to keep him on the diamond. With the rest of the season basically wasted, San Francisco can use the games to see what they have from their unproven players.

In this particular instance, Ryder Jones benefits from Belt’s absence from the lineup. Sunday Jones will play 3B as Posey takes over at first, but Saturday the rookie covered for Belt at first.
