With news coming out of Cleveland that Kyrie Irving has demanded a trade, LeBron James’ already uncertain future with the Cavaliers has been cast into even greater doubt. James’ contract is up after this upcoming season, and word on the street is that James has his eye toward LA as a preferred destination if he indeed decides to leave.
If that’s the case, Marc Spears of ESPN told Gary and Larry that Cleveland should check what they could get for James right now and see if he’s willing to waive his no-trade clause, allowing the Cavs to get something in return.
“Is it time for the Cavaliers to consider, I know LeBron says he doesn’t want to go anywhere, but under the circumstances if he’s gonna end up with the Lakers anyway, I think it probably behooves the Cavaliers to at least call the Lakers and see what offer they can make, and then approach LeBron and say ‘hey would you like to go there right now?’ Spears said.
“It’s the same way that the Clippers, you know they didn’t get any big name guys but at least they got some assets, got some people that could play in return for Chris Paul,” he continued. “If the Lakers could give them like say, Brandon Ingram, they could do a trade right now for Julius Randle, Brandon Ingram, Luol Deng and perhaps throw a first in there, and it works financially for LeBron James, but LeBron has the power. He has a no trade clause and if he wants to do a swan song in Cleveland he has the power to force them to do that.”
