Bruce Bochy won’t be in the dugout for much of the Giants’ Monday evening matchup against the Pittsburgh Pirates.
Not that he would want to watch Monday’s mess, anyway.
After Matt Cain surrendered a three-run home run to Pirates’ center fielder Andrew McCutchen, Cain and home plate umpire Chris Conroy exchanged words in front of home plate.
Earlier in the at-bat with McCutchen, Cain threw a 1-0 curveball that appeared to catch the upper right quadrant of the strike zone, but the pitch was called a ball by Conroy.
Then, after surrendering the home run to McCutchen, Cain walked toward Conroy to ask for a new baseball, and Conroy appeared to take longer than usual providing Cain with another ball.
Bochy did not take kindly to Conroy having words for one of his players, and immediately left the dugout to share his thoughts with the home plate umpire. After a brief argument, Conroy gave Bochy the boot.
The ejection was Bochy’s second this season, and his first June 16, when he argued balls and strikes in the seventh inning of a 10-8 Giants’ loss to the Rockies at Coors Field.
After allowing the three-run home run, Cain and the Giants faced a 6-0 deficit.
