We knew it was coming. Now, it’s official.

Stephen Curry has agreed to a five-year extension worth $201 million to return to the defending champion Golden State Warriors, according to Adrian Wojnarowski of ESPN.

The contract is the largest in NBA history. Under the terms of the new collective bargaining agreement, the Warriors could offer Curry a much sweeter deal than any of the other 31 teams in the league.

Curry will be in a Warriors uniform through the 2021-22 season. In the last year of the deal, Curry is in line to make well over $40 million. Since the Warriors have Bird rights on Curry, they can go over the salary cap to sign him to such a large contract.

It’s a long overdue pay raise for Curry, who just completed a four-year, $44 million contract with the Warriors. When Curry signed that deal prior to the 2012-13 season, it was considered by some to be a risky investment towards a player that had dealt with ankle injuries throughout the first three seasons of his career.

Instead, Curry is now a two-time league MVP that helped lead the team to championships in 2015 and 2017. The skinny kid drafted out of Davidson College in 2009 is recognized by many as the greatest shooter of all time and has revolutionized the way the game is played.

Curry’s last contract is arguably the biggest bargain in NBA history. Now, the time has come for the face of the Warriors franchise to get paid.
