Joe Lacob: Warriors willing to do ‘whatever it takes’ to keep Stephen Curry

Stephen Curry is finally due for a huge payday after being compensated like a role player for the past four seasons.

Curry signed a four-year, $44 million contract in 2013, before he was a two-time MVP, and when it looked like chronic ankle injuries might derail his career. That contract is up this offseason, and Curry, 29, is now eligible for five-year, $205 million extension. According to comments made by Warriors owner Joe Lacob to the San Jose Mercury News, he’s going to get it.

“We’re going to do whatever it takes to keep Steph here and happy,” Lacob said on Tim Kawakami’s podcast. “And I know he wants to be here and we want him here. So, I do not anticipate any issues with him staying.”

The comments shouldn’t come as a surprise considering that Curry has more than earned a max deal, and that he’s said previously that he cannot see himself playing anywhere other than Golden State. Best of all for the Warriors, as long as Kevin Durant takes a few million less than the max this offseason, Golden State can keep their entire core intact for at least 2017-18.

Curry is coming off his best postseason, and his best performance ever in the NBA Finals, averaging 26.8 points, eight rebounds and 9.4 assists. Since signing his contract in 2013, Curry has won two NBA titles, two MVPs, made four All-Star teams, won a scoring title and set the NBA record for 3-pointers made in a season.
