Panik held out with sprained thumb [report]

The only Giants’ player with an extra base hit on Friday night is second baseman Aaron Hill, and Hill is only in the lineup because the team’s starter can’t go.

The San Francisco Chronicle’s John Shea reported during the sixth inning of Friday’s game that starting second baseman Joe Panik is out with a mild thumb sprain on his glove hand. According to Shea, Panik had an MRI and will need a couple of days off.

Panik started for the Giants against the Brewers on Thursday, and the infielder went 2-for-4 with a pair of runs batted in. Panik also hit his third home run of the season in the Giants’ 9-5 win, but for now, at least temporarily, he’s on the shelf.

The Giants have 13 pitchers and 12 position players on their 25-man roster, as the team activated reliever Sam Dyson and optioned rookie Orlando Calixte to AAA Sacramento on Friday.

Hill started in Panik’s place, recording a leadoff triple in the bottom half of the third inning and a walk in the bottom of the fifth.

The veteran could find himself in the lineup in the coming days as well, as the Giants’ depth is temporarily depleted.
