Giants acquire Rangers’ reliever Sam Dyson

The San Francisco Giants could become sellers by Major League Baseball’s trade deadline, but on Tuesday evening, the franchise entered the market as buyers.

The organization added to its bullpen depth by trading for Texas Rangers’ right-hander Sam Dyson, a sixth-year veteran struggling through the worst season of his professional career.

A season after posting 38 saves and a 2.43 earned run average for the Rangers, Dyson became a significant liability for the Texas bullpen. To date, Dyson has appeared in 17 games and recorded a 10.80 ERA, allowing 31 hits and 12 walks in 16 and 2/3 innings pitched.

The Giants acquired Dyson in exchange for a player to be named later or cash considerations.

To make room for Dyson on the team’s 40-man roster, San Francisco transferred left-handed starter Madison Bumgarner to the 60-day disabled list. The transfer of Bumgarner comes 46 days after he was initially placed on the team’s disabled list.

Dyson was designated for assignment by Texas on Friday, two days after Dyson surrendered a pair of home runs in the 10th inning of a Rangers’ loss to Tampa Bay.

The 29-year-old Dyson finished third in the American League in saves last season, and carried over his success to the World Baseball Classic this spring. Dyson appeared in five games for Team USA, pitching six innings of hitless ball and striking out four hitters.

Over a six-year career in the majors, Dyson has pitched for the Rangers, Marlins and Blue Jays, and has a career ERA of 3.54. Dyson lost the closer’s job this season after blowing his first four chances for the Rangers.

Originally drafted by Toronto in 2010, Dyson has appeared in 203 games in his MLB career.

The Giants’ trade for Dyson was completed during the team’s contest against the Milwaukee Brewers at Miller Park on Tuesday evening.
