SAN FRANCISCO – The San Francisco Giants have called up Orlando Calixte, a 25-year-old utility player from Triple-A Sacramento.
Although Calixte is now in San Francisco, he wasn’t activated for Monday’s series opener against the Washington Nationals. That only would have happened if the Giants chose to send Eduardo Núñez to the DL after a play at the plate Sunday.
The Giants say they are evaluating Núñez for a concussion after he got hit in the head by a ball at a play at the plate in Sunday’s 7-1 win over the Atlanta Braves. Bruce Bochy said before the game that Núñez had blurred vision after scoring on the past ball, and felt worse when he woke up Monday morning.
Had the team decided they wanted to send Núñez to the DL before Monday’s game, Calixte would have been activated. They did not, so Calixte can sit back and enjoy a day off.
That being said, Bochy didn’t rule out the possibility of activating Calixte in the near future.
However, Bochy said there's a chance Calixte could be activated tomorrow as part of another move even if Nuñez avoids DL.

Calixte was hitting .287 with 26 RBIs through 41 games in Sacramento. He’s a super-utility player, capable of playing both the infield and outfield. He’s not a bad player to have in the dugout for a team that’s struggled to get consistent production from multiple positions in the lineup this year.
Calixte spent six years in the Kansas City Royals minor league system before the Giants signed him to a minor league contract. He joined the Royals out of the Dominican Republic in 2010. After the 2013 season Baseball America ranked the infielder/outfielder as the 7th best prospect in the Royals’ farm system. That was the highest ranking he received.
