The Giants are not starting the season the way they hoped. The team is 20-29 and sitting in second-to-last place in the NL West.
Their recent struggles seemed to boil over during an argument between Buster Posey and Brandon Belt in the handshake line after a 3-1 win Saturday. The incident possibly stemmed from a play in the 13th inning, where Belt failed to adhere to Posey’s suggestion to move closer to first, which then lead to Stephen Piscotty stealing second base.
Posey glared in Belt’s direction after Piscotty’s steal.
Despite the frustration, Giants bench coach Ron Wotus told Garry and Larry Wednesday that he is supportive of players holding each other accountable.
“The beauty about players caring about wins and losses…and getting on one another for whatever reason, is [it’s] a positive thing,” Wotus said. “When guys are whispering behind each other’s backs…and nobody confronts their teammates, I think you don’t play at the same level. A lot of times this type of stuff can spark the team to be more accountable and play the way you should.”
Wotus said that moments like the one between Posey and Belt are important if channeled positively.
“When you’re losing there’s a lot of things you can be upset about, but a lot of times these little things can spiral into better baseball. That’s just baseball, there’s a lot of testosterone and it’s a competitive environment. I think it’s a good thing…the guys want to win.”
