Kuiper: Williamson’s bat may give him staying power

With right-fielder Hunter Pence being placed on the 10-day DL with a left hamstring strain, the Giant’s options in the outfield are starting to wear thin. However, San Francisco was given a glimmer of hope Monday with the performance of Mac Williamson. In his first game since being called up from Triple-A, Williamson went two for four with an RBI single and did a solid job defensively subbing in for Pence in right field.

Giants broadcaster Duane Kuiper told Murph & Mac Tuesday that Williamson certainly looks the part of a major league outfielder and his performance against the Dodgers showed his ability at the plate.

“He wins the how you’re supposed to look in a uniform award,” Kuiper said. “Pick a spot in any sport and that’s how you’re supposed to look. Two hits in his first game here doesn’t guarantee that he’s going to stay for the rest of the year, but it’s a heck of a good start against your rival and it’s nice to see him go the other way.”

Kuiper said that Williamson’s chances at playing everyday rest squarely on his own shoulders, but his strong start could be a sign of what he can bring to a Giants squad in need of some energy.

“He would be a shot in the arm, he really would be,” Kuiper said. “So as long as he keeps swinging it he’s going to be playing. It’s gona be up to him, he does have a real chance to stay, but again that’s up to him.”
