The 49ers announced Friday that they have signed cornerback Ahkello Witherspoon, a third round pick in the 2017 draft, to a four-year contract.
Witherspoon went to Colorado, where he played in 36 games and made 21 starts in three seasons with the team. He recorded 77 tackles and made three interceptions in his career. He was selected 66th overall by the 49ers, and was one of two third round picks made by the team this year.
The 22-year-old is a native of Sacramento and attended Christian Brothers High School. He attended Sacramento City College as a freshman before transferring to Colorado. As a senior with the Buffaloes in 2016, Witherspoon was named second team all-Pac 12 after appearing in all 14 games and recording 24 tackles and 22 pass breakups. The 22 pass breakups led the nation and tied a school record for a single season.
Witherspoon is the seventh 49ers draft pick to sign with the team, and only the team’s two first round picks and their other third round pick remain unsigned. First rounders Solomon Thomas and Reuben Foster have yet to sign with San Francisco, and third round quarterback C.J. Beathard has not yet signed either.
