Christian Arroyo crushed a three-run double off Jeurys Familia in the top of the ninth and Derek Law escaped some drama in the bottom of the ninth as the Giants halted a five-game skid and defeated the Mets 6-5 on Wednesday afternoon at Citi Field.
Law – playing in the closer role in place of Mark Melancon – gave up a two-out, two-run double to the warning track in deep center to Wilmer Flores in the ninth, but got Kevin Plawecki on a swinging bunt to first that stranded the tying run on second.
The victory marked the first time in the last 134 games that the Giants won after trailing through eight innings. The last time that occurred was against the Marlins on May 10, 2015 – exactly two years ago
After Buster Posey walked to load the bases in the top half of the ninth, Arroyo sent a 1-0 pitch to the left-center wall and cleared the bases.
Hunter Pence tied the game two batters earlier by sending a ground ball past a diving Wilmer Flores to score Joe Panik.
Familia walked Panik and Flores misplayed Eduardo Nunez’s ground ball to set the runners up for Pence.
Earlier in the afternoon, Posey homered for the third straight game, sending a 2-2 pitch from starting pitcher Tommy Milone into the left-field seats in the second inning. It was his fifth home run of the season.
The Giants scored again in the sixth thanks to a Justin Ruggiano sacrifice fly.
Matt Cain gave up three runs (two earned) over five innings, including a solo shot to Jay Bruce in the third.
The Giants will head back to San Francisco to kick off a seven-game home stand. They’ll look for some redemption against the Cincinnati Reds during the weekend and take on the Dodgers on Monday. Brandon Crawford is expected to return from the disabled list in time for Thursday’s game.
Bronson Arroyo (3-2, 6.53) will face Ty Blach (0-2, 5.66) at 7:15 p.m. Thursday at AT&T Park.
