Krueger and Jones: 49ers execute an actual plan in the draft

Larry Krueger and Kevin Jones are back at it, breaking down the San Francisco 49ers’ 2017 draft haul.

Both Krueger and Jones like that the 49ers made draft picks with conviction. Whether it was C.J. Beathard a few rounds earlier than expected, or trading back up for Reuben Foster, the 49ers had players they wanted, and they went out and got them.

Kevin Jones: What I liked about the 49ers’ draft was the clear strategy. They said, let’s accumulate future draft picks, build a bully on defense and trust Kyle Shanahan with the offense. You saw that all play out. It’s the first time in awhile this team has clear plan that makes sense. I thought it was a good draft overall, we’ll see which players pan out, but I like their plan. I think they have a 6-10 record this season, with a couple of close losses where they easily could’ve been 8-8.

Larry Krueger: It’s pretty clear John Lynch listened to Kyle Shanahan. Look at C.J. Beathard when the GM was talking about him, he said Kyle has particular traits that he looks for in quarterbacks. We had the ammo to go get him, so we traded up to get the QB our coach wanted. When it came to Joe Williams, Kyle would be sick if he didn’t have Joe Williams on the team, so he got Joe Williams. Trent Taylor he described as Kyle’s draft crush. I like the fact that Lynch listens to his head coach. Trent Baalke, Chip Kelly, Jim Harbaugh, these people were never going to let Peter King embed himself into the war room. There was a paranoia that surrounded this organization before Shanahan and Lynch showed up, that now, I think is gone.
