Hoyer: I’m acting as the 49ers’ starting quarterback until I’m not

One day before the draft, there still isn’t a consensus amongst experts regarding whether or not the San Francisco 49ers are planning on selecting a franchise quarterback with the second overall pick.

Recently signed QB Brian Hoyer isn’t worrying about that though. Assumed to be brought in as a stop gap option for the 2017 season, the eight-year veteran told Murph and Mac on Wednesday morning that he’s going to act as if he’s the team’s starting quarterback until he’s told otherwise.

“Yeah for sure,” Hoyer said when asked if he’s the 49ers’ starting quarterback. “I think that’s what I was brought into do at this point. The thing that I’ve learned in this profession and really in life is not worry about things you can’t control, so I can’t control who they draft with the second pick tomorrow, and I’m not going to live my life worrying about it. I’m going to go out there and do what I think my job is at this point, and I’m going to do that as long as I can until they tell me it’s not my job anymore.”

Hoyer feels that he has a leg up on his teammates heading into training camp, due to his experience playing in Kyle Shanahan’s system when the two were with the Browns during the 2014 season.

“I definitely feel that way. Being able to take ownership over the offense, be the guy out there. Like I said before having played with Kyle before, I have a better grasp on the system then most of these other guys do at this point, so I’m really trying to take that role and help everybody out. I’ve heard these plays before, I’ve heard them in my helmet coming in during games. So for me when I’m in the huddle I’m trying to be the guy who’s looking and kind’ve giving these guys — you know ‘you’re lining up over here or this is the play over here’ — just trying to do those types of things, which actually a quarterback has to do. At this point I feel confident in where I’m at and the things that we’re doing, so yeah I definitely feel that way.”
