Walnut Creek native and Giants prospect Domenic Mazza threw a perfect game with the Giants’ South Atlantic league affiliate in Augusta, GA. Better yet, Mazza threw the perfect game on just 85 pitches, which was the first perfect game in South Atlantic league history.
Mazza joined Murph and Mac Thursday morning to discuss his record-setting accomplishment. “I’m still riding the wave right now for sure, probably until my next start this one will last,” Mazza said. “They started off aggressive in the beginning of the game, which I like. But not until the third did I start even really thinking of anything, and then just as the game kind of progressed in the fifth I was feeling pretty good. And then late in the game I had some great plays made for me.” The highlights of the perfect game were shown on the Giants broadcast against the Dodgers Wednesday night as well.
Mazza went to high school at Clayton Valley-Concord, and was in the stands in 2012 when the only perfect game in San Francisco Giants history was thrown by Matt Cain. “It was a group field trip for the Public Service Academy that I was in, and we were up in the bleacher seats pretty high.”
“Bobby Evans gave me a call, which was incredible. Burt Bradley, our ptiching guy, sent me a nice text,” Mazza said on who reached out to him following the perfect game.
Mazza has been in the news before, when as a junior in high school, he placed second in the World Long Drive Championship. He turned down the $70,000 cash prize in order to retain amateur status so he could compete in college athletics.
Growing up as a Giants fan, Mazza appears to be living the dream as a pitcher working his way through the organization. “It was amazing, my family was so happy, and it was the best day of my life.”
