FivePoint, the developer in charge of revamping the now vacant site at Candlestick Point, announced in a press release Thursday they will be naming nine new streets in the upcoming development after San Francisco 49ers and Giants legends.
The area that once housed both teams at the now demolished Candlestick Park, is part of a large redevelopment project consisting of thousands of new units throughout the city’s southeastern neighborhoods.
According to Curbed, the company and city will confer the names of 49ers legendary players Joe Montana, Ronnie Lott and Jerry Rice, as well as former head coach Bill Walsh and former executives Edward DeBartolo Jr and Carmen Policy.
Former Giants Orlando Cepeda, Juan Marichal and Barry Bonds will also be included. As pointed out by Curbed, Willie Mays is not currently on the list, which seems like a strange oversight, considering he played in San Francisco for over a decade, and is one of the greatest players in MLB history. Although a cable car and a plaza at AT&T Park bear his name, he’s never had a street named for him in San Francisco. For what it’s worth, the city of New York has two streets named after Mays
The project, which includes 7,000 new homes in the Candlestick neighborhood, doesn’t yet have a completion date.
