The San Francisco Giants are partnering with Airbnb and Marc Benioff amongst a handful of others, to raise $30 million dollars as part of the Heading Home Campaign, aimed at ending family homelessness in San Francisco.

Giants’ CEO Larry Baer told Murph and Mac on Monday that the club will donate $1K to the fund for every run scored at AT&T Park this season.

“One of the things we’re doing this year which is new, which we’re really proud of, is for every run we score at home — and hopefully we’ll get a lot of them, we’ll throw a lot of money into this — a thousand dollars is going to an effort called Heading Home, which is to end family homelessness in San Francisco,” Baer said. “It’s a partnership with Airbnb, the Giants, the mayor’s office and Hamilton House. The goal is to raise $30 million, we’re putting in $1,000, us and Airbnb, for every run scored. Then we’re gonna ask the fans, whenever we score a run, to text to ‘home1999′ and that will allow dollars — whether it’s $1, $5, $100, or $1000 — toward this effort. If we raise enough money we believe we can end family homelessness in San Francisco in the next two years, but for sure by the end of the decade.”

KNBR host Brian Muprhy pointed out that one in 25 students in San Francisco comes from a homeless family.

“That’s the most compelling thing,” Baer said. “San Francisco public schools: In a class of 25, on average, one child is actually homeless. He or she may not say it, but they don’t go home. They live in a park or a car or whatever with family. And that’s something we have to stop and we have to eradicate. It’s a $30 million program. Marc Benioff has already donated $10 million — just an amazing effort. There’s a matching element to our program, so I think we can get there.”

Anyone can donate to the fund at the Giants’ official website or at hamiltonfamilies.org.
