As the Giants get ready to head back to the Bay Area, the last spot in their starting rotation continues to be a question with the season just around the corner.
While Matt Cain has had a rough spring statistically, general manager Bobby Evans joined Gary and Larry Monday to explain that the Giants do like some of the things that they are seeing from Cain despite the numbers. MLB.com lists Cain as having an 8.10 ERA in six appearances over 20 innings pitched this spring.
“I think the main thing that we see is that the command is much better,” Evans said, “which he actually displayed in the numbers in the sense that he is not walking as many guys as of late. I think we’re seeing the breaking ball crisp, the changeup is tough to hit, so there’s good signs.”
Evans went on to address the situation of IF Jae-gyun Hwang. Evans said that adjusting to the speed of the game will be Hwang’s biggest adjustment from Korea.
“I think he’s very close. I think adjusting to the speed of the game in the U.S., I think he’s done a good job of adjusting to the type of pitching, so really it’s the speed of the game defensively as well as trying to make sure we maximize any versatility that he has.”
