Giants outfield prospect Steven Duggar has only two seasons of professional baseball under his belt, but after his first Major League spring training, he feels like he’s mentally ready for the challenges of a big league season.
“Something I’ve always prided myself on is being mentally locked in, I think that part of the game is a big reason for my success,” Duggar said. “I definitely do think that I belong, it’s just a matter of time.”
Duggar had an impressive season in 2016 spending time in both San Jose and Richmond where he hit .302 with 10 home runs and 15 steals across both levels. He knows how important speed is at the top of the lineup and spent some time this spring talking with Vince Coleman about how to get better on the base paths.
“We went over some technique stuff. It was really exciting to be able to learn from him and pick his brain,” Duggar said. “It’s already been a little bit of an improvement so far with that. That’ll hopefully translate into success this year.”
An alum of Clemson University, he even gave his take on whether or not the 49ers should draft quarterback Deshaun Watson,
“There’s absolutely no question in my mind he’s the guy. He’s incredible.”
Duggar was reassigned to minor league camp last week and is expected to start the season in Sacramento.
