The Giants acquired Beckham in a trade for minor leaguer Rich Rodriguez with six games remaining in last year’s season, in an effort to provide infield depth with starting third baseman Eduardo Nunez out with a hamstring injury down the stretch. Beckham went hitless in six plate appearances. According to Alex Pavlovic of CSN Bay Area, the coaches and front office loved the impact Beckham had on the clubhouse during his brief time with the team.
Beckham, 30, will likely compete with fellow infielders Jimmy Rollins and Korean prospect Jae-Gyun Hwang for a spot on the Giants’ bench. Beckham has a career batting line of .240/.303/.370, and has spent time with the White Sox, Braves and Angels throughout his eight year career. Beckham has played both second and third base at the major league level.
Beckham entered the majors as a top prospect, selected eighth overall by the White Sox in the 2008 draft.
